A career in real estate offers independence, an ever-changing exciting landscape and ways to constantly meet new people. Additionally, you can directly reap the rewards of your successes. Barfoot & Thompson is always looking for people new to the industry who we believe can reach their full potential as part of our company. Real estate success stories come from every walk of life as ultimately someone with a great attitude is just as important as knowledge.
How do you get started in real estate?
Real estate salespeople in New Zealand must first get a qualification from an approved provider and then be licensed by the
Real Estate Authority (REA). They are independent contractors and are paid on a commission basis. Branch Managers respond well to proactive candidates and it's great to begin the conversation while you're completing your real estate qualification. Having access to a mentor and someone experienced in the field is a great way to enable your success.
What qualifications will I need?
The New Zealand Certificate in Real Estate (Salesperson) (Level 4) provides the knowledge and skills required for property sales in New Zealand. Upon successful completion of the qualification, you can apply to the Real Estate Authority (REA) for a Salesperson's license, which is necessary before engaging in any real estate transactions in New Zealand.
How do I get my qualification?
There are a number of educational organisations that offer real estate qualifications including the following:
Skills
Open Polytechnic
TAFE
Unitec
Each provider presents different learning options, such as in-class sessions, night classes, or online courses. Typically, it takes around 3 to 6 months to complete the qualification, depending on individuals' commitments. While the duration of the course may vary, a reasonable estimate for the actual study time is approximately 100 hours. Please do your own research on each provider as information is likely to change and we cannot be held responsible for inaccuracies.
